Recognizing Dry Eye Symptoms

Our eyes use a layer of moisture, or tear film, to protect us from dryness and irritants. Dry eye disease disrupts this barrier, exposing the eye to irritants and dryness.

Common symptoms can include:

  • Redness
  • Excessive tearing
  • A gritty sensation in the eye

These symptoms can make daily activities like reading or watching TV uncomfortable.

Identifying the Causes of Dry Eye

Our eyes are coated in a layer of oil, mucus, and water, known as tear film. A balanced tear film keeps our vision clear and our eyes protected by locking in moisture and clearing out debris.

When one or more of these layers are disrupted, tears may evaporate too quickly or be low in quality, causing dry eye symptoms. The quality of our tears can be impacted by aging, medications, environmental factors, or underlying eye conditions like meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

Dry eye disease is a common condition, and luckily, a wide variety of treatments could help manage your symptoms.

Understanding MGD

Our meibomian glands produce the protective layer of oil that keeps our eyes hydrated. MGD happens when these glands are clogged or inflamed and cannot produce enough oil. As a result, our tears evaporate too quickly, causing dry eye disease.

Certain health conditions like damaged eyelids, high cholesterol, and autoimmune disease can put you at risk for MGD. Other risk factors can include your age or wearing contacts.

Radiofrequency treatment and intense pulsed light therapy are some of the ways we can address MGD and help encourage healthy tear production.

Comprehensive Dry Eye Diagnostics

At Fairmont Eye Care, we understand the discomfort that dry eye disease causes. That’s why dry eye screenings are included in all of our comprehensive eye exams. Diagnosis is the first step towards prioritizing your comfort and vision health.

During the diagnostic stage, we can determine what treatment option is right for your specific needs. Our team is also happy to answer any questions or concerns you have about dry eye during your consultation.

Here are some methods we use to diagnose and manage dry eye for our patients.

Meibography

Meibography is an imaging techniqMeibography is an imaging technique that allows us to see the inside of your eyelids to check on your meibomian glands. We use special dyes to examine your eye’s surface more closely and help check for damage or dryness. Dyes can help us accurately assess your eye’s health so that we can customize your treatment.

A TBUT test helps measure how long it takes for tears to break up after you blink, indicating whether they provide enough protection. If they evaporate too quickly, it may mean that your tears aren’t keeping enough moisture in your eye.

During a Schirmer’s test, we place a small strip of paper under your lower eyelid to help determine if your eyes produce enough tears.

InflammaDry can help us detect special proteins related to inflammation in the eye. This can help us decide if inflammation contributes to dry eye symptoms and guide us toward treatments that will reduce discomfort and improve tear production.

Effective Dry Eye Treatments

The symptoms of dry eye disease can vary, and our team understands that every patient is unique. We pride ourselves on staying up-to-date with innovations in dry eye treatment to help  offer our patients tailored treatments that suit their needs.

Our eye doctors have always been leaders in customizing treatments and therapies for dry eye care. As early adopters of many proven, innovative techniques, we have years of experience refining these procedures to deliver improved outcomes.  From modern therapies to time-tested solutions, we provide a range of dry eye treatments to help relieve your symptoms.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

IPL treatment uses quick pulses of light to target and reduce inflammation in the eyelid. It can help clear blocked meibomian glands and improve tear production to reduce dry eye symptoms.

We use meibomian gland expression, which involves gently removing blockages to help maintain a healthy oil balance in your tear film.

Eyelid debridement and masks can also cleanse and soothe your eyes. These gentle treatments can open up your meibomian glands to promote healthy tears.

While over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops for dry eye may offer temporary relief by lubricating the eye surface, prescription eye drops often address the underlying cause of dry eye.

Prescription eye drops can contain active ingredients that help reduce inflammation and promote tear production, leading to more lasting relief than OTC drops.

Amniotic membranes are thin, transparent tissues that act as a natural, protective bandage for the eye’s surface. The tissue layer helps promote healing, reduce inflammation, and improve tear production.

Amniotic membranes can be a valuable option for patients with chronic or severe dry eye who haven’t responded to standard therapies.

Radiofrequency (RF) Treatments

RF therapy uses radio waves to deliver gentle heat energy to warm your eyelid tissues. Heat can help dissolve meibomian gland blockages and improve the stability of your tear film, reducing dry eye symptoms.

To promote tear production, we can use punctal plugs to help you retain moisture by blocking your tear ducts. For increased lubrication, medicated eye drops can be prescribed to deliver moisture and address inflammation in the eye.

We also recommend Omega-3 supplements, which can help improve your tear quality and reduce inflammation.

Ocular steroids are potent anti-inflammatory medications that can effectively treat severe dry eye conditions. Eye doctors typically prescribe steroids for short-term use to manage acute flare-ups or specific inflammatory conditions associated with dry eye.

Serum tears contain essential growth factors and nutrients that promote healing and reduce inflammation on the ocular surface. This approach can be highly effective, but because they require a specialized preparation process, serum tears are usually saved for cases where traditional treatments haven’t worked.
